Sciatic Pain During Pregnancy: Causes and Relief.

Sciatic pain during pregnancy is one of the most common — and most effectively treated — conditions I work with. The sharp, burning, or electric pain that radiates from the hip into the buttock and down the leg is recognizable to anyone who has experienced it, and during pregnancy it can become severe enough to significantly limit mobility. It doesn't have to persist for the duration of the pregnancy.

WHAT'S ACTUALLY CAUSING IT.

Most pregnancy-related sciatic pain is not caused by a herniated disc pressing on the nerve — it's caused by piriformis compression. The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the gluteal region through which, or adjacent to which, the sciatic nerve passes. As the pelvis widens and shifts during pregnancy, the piriformis tightens and can compress the sciatic nerve from the outside.

This is actually good news — it means the condition is highly responsive to soft tissue therapy. Piriformis compression doesn't require medical intervention; it requires releasing the muscle that's doing the compressing. The gluteal muscles, which often become overloaded as they compensate for pelvic instability during pregnancy, contribute additional tension. Trigger points in these muscles refer pain down the leg in patterns that closely mimic sciatica.

HOW PRENATAL MASSAGE ADDRESSES IT.

Prenatal massage using trigger point therapy and targeted neuromuscular technique to the piriformis and gluteal muscles is remarkably effective for pregnancy sciatica. Side-lying positioning allows full access to the affected muscles safely, without any compression of the abdomen or vena cava.

In my experience, clients often feel a significant reduction in sciatic symptoms within a single session. The relief is real, and for many clients it allows them to walk, sleep, and function normally for the rest of the pregnancy.
