Therapeutic soft tissue therapy session at Eclipse Wellness, River Oaks Houston

MORE THAN RELAXATION.

Prenatal massage at Eclipse Wellness goes beyond a standard relaxation treatment. Our therapist, Samantha Davis, integrates Neuromuscular Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy, and Swedish Integrative Massage to address the specific structural and soft tissue changes that occur during pregnancy.

As pregnancy progresses, the body's center of gravity shifts, the lumbar curve deepens, the pelvis tilts forward, and the surrounding muscles — the hip flexors, piriformis, gluteals, and lower back — adapt under increasing load. These adaptations create predictable patterns of tension, referred pain, and nerve compression that manual therapy can directly address.

Sessions are adapted for each trimester and tailored to your specific symptoms. Positioning is always chosen for safety and comfort at every stage of pregnancy.

SAFETY & APPROACH.

Prenatal massage is safe throughout all three trimesters when performed by a trained therapist using appropriate technique and positioning. We use side-lying positioning with supportive pillows after the first trimester and avoid specific pressure points contraindicated during pregnancy.

We recommend consulting with your OB or midwife before your first session, particularly if you have a high-risk pregnancy, placenta previa, preeclampsia, or a history of preterm labor. For most healthy pregnancies, manual therapy is not only safe but beneficial for both mother and baby.

COMMON QUESTIONS.

Is prenatal massage safe during the first trimester?

Prenatal massage can be performed safely in the first trimester, though many therapists and OBs recommend waiting until the second trimester when the risk of miscarriage is significantly lower. At Eclipse Wellness, we defer to your OB or midwife's guidance and ask that you consult with them before your first session if you have any concerns or a high-risk pregnancy.

What position are you in during a prenatal massage?

After the first trimester, prenatal sessions are performed in a side-lying position supported by pillows. This is the safest and most comfortable position as the pregnancy progresses, allowing full access to the back, hips, and legs without any pressure on the abdomen. Specific pressure points contraindicated during pregnancy are always avoided.

Can prenatal massage help with sciatic pain during pregnancy?

Yes. Sciatic pain during pregnancy typically comes from the piriformis muscle — a small but powerful hip rotator that tightens as the pelvis shifts to accommodate the growing uterus. Trigger point release in the piriformis and surrounding hip musculature often provides immediate and lasting relief. Many clients who have struggled with sciatica throughout their pregnancies find it resolves entirely after 1–2 sessions.

How often should I get a prenatal massage?

Most clients benefit from monthly sessions in the first and second trimester, and every 2–3 weeks in the third trimester as structural demands increase. If you are experiencing significant discomfort — back pain, sciatica, hip tension — more frequent sessions may be appropriate. Your therapist will give you a recommendation based on your condition at the first visit.

What makes this different from a spa prenatal massage?

The therapist at Eclipse Wellness integrates Neuromuscular Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy, and Swedish techniques rather than applying a single modality throughout. Sessions begin with an assessment of your specific symptoms and use the technique most appropriate for each condition. The goal is to resolve the structural causes of your discomfort, not provide general relaxation — though that often happens too.
